Beskrivelse
The dance house idea arose from wanting to host a strawbale house building course, and from the need for more space at the school.
For one month in July 2004, carpenter Stefan Preusche and 3 helpers built the wood frame construction.
In August, two 14-day long courses were held by Caroline Meyer White and assistants. A mussel shell foundation was laid, and preparation was made for a clay/linseed oil floor. Strawbale walls started to come up, and were plastered with clay plaster. The ceiling was made from wooden boards with fire protective clay plaster on top. Windows went in.
In September, volunteers finished the strawbale walls, and gave the first plaster. The roof was sealed off with a big membrane, but soil was not added yet because it was late in the year and newly seeded grasses wouldn’t get started and therefore there was a great chance that the soil would wash down if not otherwise held on.
This proved to be a bad idea. In a hurricane in January 2005 the membrane blew off leaving the strawbales in the roof unprotected, and the membrane in a bad condition. The house has temporary tarps over it now, and is awaitening spring for renovation.
Giving the strawbale courses was a great experience, very fulfilling for all participants. A lot of what we did was for the first time for all of us, which made the educational experience more useful for people going back home to start out on their own.
