Beskrivelse
This house is the first house built according to the Q-woningen formula
as thought out by Martin Oehlmann and Jan Steenks. The basic concept is
to build ecologically sound houses for the same or even lower prices
then conventionally built houses. Normally somebody like the owner
Menny Pastoor would not even dream of building her own house. But now
the combination of Q-woningen system and the inovative way the
Amsterdam town council made ground available has made it possible. In
the short time since June 2005 the house has already generated a lot of
media coverage and interest. This is not only due to the clearly
ecological image of the house but also due to the location, 5 minutes
from the Amsterdam city centre. Several tourist buses come by every
week and the main attraction is the SB house.

The SB build started in June 2005 the foundation, only a slab no piles,
was laid in February the work was suspended a while for other projects.
The contractor Rene van der Hout who as he said "never held a bale in
his hands" was open to the challenge. Rene Dalmeijer assisted him
during the project. Due to the novel nature of the project, the
Q-woningen system and the use of straw bales many smaller or bigger
problems had to be dealt with on the job. A major obstacle was that
finances for completion of the job ran out in September 2005. Building
was stopped until additional financing was arranged. In April 2006 work
could start again to finish off a few 'minor' aspects like a bathroom
and interior plastering. Meanwhile Menny had camped out in the house
and was finally evicted by the pressured building inspector. Actually
he had been very lenient but higher legal powers were afraid of the
repercussions a fire would have due to the unprotected bales. Finally
On Friday 28 April, The day before Queens day, the house was reported
ready by the inspector so from then on Menny can live in her SB house.

Klima

Dutch climate; winters around 0C, summers 15C, 1000mm annual average
rainfall rarely heavy rain but often long dreary spells

Konstruktion, fundament, isolering
Modified post and beam, french style. ie the bales are stacked between
full building height posts. The posts 230x38 are attached between an
upper and lower ladder frame. The roof is carried by 8 11m purpose
felled douglas firs, with the bark on. The roofing is 38mm pine tongue
and grooved planks on top of this is a light green roof (40kg/m^2) with
an 1.14mm thick EPDM waterproof membrane.

The foundation is a conventional concrete reinforced ringbeam resting
directly on sand. The floor is a prefab EPS 300mm thick with a minimal
concrete cover.

Where strawbales were not used we used flax fibre batts, otherwise
strawbales flat 490mm
