Deportations would violate UN conventions

The left-wing parties and numerous lawyers criticize a government plan. Beginning in spring, Venstre and Konservative, together with Dansk Folkeparti, want to make it possible to deport non-Danish citizens who prevent police carrying out their duties.

Both recently-arrived foreigners and foreigners who are born and reside permanently in Denmark - but are not Danish nationals - could be deported, according to daily newspaper Information.

- But deportation is only an option in cases of very serious criminal offences, says Henrik Dam Kristensen from Socialdemokratiet, among others.

The government is working in contradiction of international conventions, he says.
