Discount stores make gains
26. feb. 2010 09.43 EnglishThe discount sector wants to capitalize on the increased price-consciousness of consumers, and the sector plans to open twice as many new stores this year as last year.
On top of that, Denmark's two largest chains of stores are upping their assessments of how many stores they think the Danish market will support. Both Fakta and Netto plan to significantly increase the number of discount supermarkets, writes daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
The investments come not least because the discount sector has been snatching market shares from other supermarkets, grocery stores, and department stores.
Discount sector growth
Last year, discount stores increased their turnover by just shy of five percent, while other types of stores experienced decreasing turnovers.
The discount store chains expect to open 80 new stores across Denmark. That is a significantly higher number than in 2009, when just over 40 new stores opened their doors.
The Rema 1000, Fakta, and Kiwi Minipris chains of stores set the high marks in terms of growth this year.
