Ukrainian doctors under observation

08. mar. 2010 11.41 English

Getting a medical degree in Ukraine is cheap. But the merits of that education are so dubious that doctors trained in Ukraine should be placed under close observation, says Minister for the Interior and Health, Bertel Haarder.

According to DR television news 21 Søndag, 30 doctors working in Denmark were trained in Ukraine.

Malaysia has placed doctors from Ukraine under observation, and Bertel Haarder says that it stands to reason that doctors with a medical diploma from Ukraine should be placed on a watch list.

Should work without pay
- If you lack theoretical training, you have to make up for what your lack at your own expense. If you lack practical training - that is, the clinical part of the education - you have to work without pay until you are as competent as a Danish doctor, Bertel Haarder tells DR News.

He emphasizes that would be doctors must finish the clinical training and take their diploma before they get to try their hand on Danish patients.

Tomorrow, Bertel Haarder will meet with the National Board of Health in order to tighten the rules for doctors with foreign diplomas working in Denmark.
