Villy Søvndal

The reservation gives Denmark the opportunity to build bridges within Europe, stated Søvndal. Nonsense, said former Minister for Foreign Affairs Uffe Ellemann (L).

Minister for Foreign Affairs Villy Søvndal (SPP) believes the Danish reservation towards the Euro was a wise decision, which now puts Denmark in a favourable position within the EU, according to Danish daily Jyllands-Posten.

At the same time, PM Helle Thorning-Schmidt (SocDem) and Minister for Economic Affairs and the Interior Margrethe Vestager (SocLib) both state that Denmark is making an effort to become the 18th EMU country and that there are plenty of reasons to consider a Danish membership of the monetary Eurozone.

Søvndal disagrees: "I think everyone will recognise that after the economic crisis, the reservation was a very smart arrangement for Denmark. It enables us to build bridges within a more flexible Europe. Our current position is that we want to participate in the practical cooperation to the extent it makes sense for and is an advantage to Denmark," said Søvndal to Jyllands-Posten.
