LA in shock over unemployment statistics
29. jan. 2013 13.53 EnglishAnders Samuelsen, party chair of the Liberal Alliance party, has expressed his surprise and shock after a recent survey showed that in 95 out of 98 Danish municipalities, unemployed people will soon be in the majority.
"We've known for a while that the unemployment situation was becoming untenable, but these figures are absolutely shocking," said Samuelsen.
In 2009, employed people held the majority in 59 municipalities.
"This trend poses a serious threat to Denmark's future, because it shows that we are becoming poorer as a nation. If this continues, we will not be able to provide for society's weakest when they need help. This ship is sinking," said Samuelsen.
Subversive activity
On Sunday night, investigative programme 21 Søndag reported that only three municipalities had more people on the labour market than off it. Anders Samuelsen feels the gravity of the problem is being ignored.
"The government's inability to treat the situation seriously borders on subversive activity. We need extensive labour reforms soon, otherwise the system will collapse. We demand a definite response from the government on what they intend to do about it," said Samuelsen.
