Nørrebro car attack: 1st verdict reached

31. jan. 2013 12.28 English

It was not attempted murder when a group of 10-12 people attacked a car carrying four concert-goers from Jutland in the Nørrebro area of Copenhagen in May.

This was the verdict of the City Court of Copenhagen on Wednesday, when a 17-year-old boy was the first of the attackers to be tried. He was found guilty of aggravated assault.

The attack is alleged to have been carried out because the perpetrators believed that the Jutlanders belonged to the biker group AK81, which supports the Hells Angels and is in conflict with, among others, the street gang based around the public square of Blågårds Plads.

Gang connection not proven

The City Court of Copenhagen established, however, that legally the attack could not be regarded as gang related. This was because even though the attackers believed that the Jutlanders were bikers, it was not proven to the satisfaction of the court that the attackers themselves had gang connections.

During the attack, one of the victims was stabbed twice in the chest and once in the back with a knife, but survived.

The court accepted as proven that the 17-year-old boy was at the scene of the attack and was carrying a knife. It did not accept as proven, however, that it was this knife that was used in the stabbing, nor that it was the boy in question who carried out the stabbing.

The court ruled that the boy should be convicted of aggravated assault for his role in the attack. Sentencing was due to be carried out on Wednesday afternoon.
