Red Cross in Mali: adjustments daily
04. feb. 2013 13.56 EnglishThe requirements for emergency aid are changing daily in Mali, according to Elise Bjerkrheim, emergency aid co-ordinator for the Danish Red Cross in Mali.
“We have two situations that we are closely monitoring on a daily basis. One involves the many displaced people who continue to seek refuge, as well as those now choosing to take flight.
The second situation involves the many people who want to return home, as well as some who may have already arrived back home,” said Bjerkrheim.
“Their needs are very different. The first group is perhaps in most need of blankets, mats, tents, food and hygiene kits. The people who have returned home are in need of starter packs with kitchenware and food.”
Wait and see
According to Bjerkrheim, many of the internally displaced refugees are waiting to see how the situation progresses before returning home to their villages.
Danish Red Cross is working with Red Cross volunteers in the distribution of emergency aid in Mali.
Red Cross has five warehouses in Mali from which it can distribute emergency aid to 12,000 families.
