SocLibs hope for modern pope
12. feb. 2013 12.47 EnglishA pope abdicating is nearly unheard of in itself, but according to the Danish Social Liberal Party, the development need not stop there.
“It would be amazing if the Catholics would continue this fresh approach by selecting a new pope with his eye turned towards the future, a pope who understands the need for birth control in the war against AIDS,” Marlene Borst Hansen, spokesperson on equality and culture for the Social Liberals, told dr.dk.
The Social Liberals are hoping for a new pope, who understands how the world has changed beyond the institution of the papacy.
Borst Hansen also hopes that the next pope will extend his influence to promote peace.
“The pope has a unique status. When you’re not a Catholic, you don’t glorify him in the same way, but he has a worldwide impact and it would be great if he could work to unite people of faith regardless of religion to help end religious conflict,” said Borst Hansen.
The Vatican has announced that the 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI will abdicate on 28 February 2013.
