Original Title: Den Bevægede Jord
In 1542 Polish astronomer Copernicus presented an idea about the moving earth, that the sun – not the earth – was the centre of the universe. A highly controversial notion that strongly challenged the position of the Church. The Moving Earth tells the story of how this new picture of the universe came into existence. It took centuries and a fierce battle with the Church and its outdated presumptions, often with tragic consequences for the scientists involved. But the collective work of a network of natural scientists of the Renaissance, finally led to a new recognition. Copernicus’ idea was followed by Tycho Brahe’s groundbreaking research, Kepler’s proof that planets travel in elliptical orbits, Gali-lei’s first telescopic observations and finally Isaac Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation.
2009 is the International Year of Astronomy.
