Dmitry Shostakovich contradicted Stalin to his face and balanced on a knife’s edge when his Fifth Symphony was set up in Moscow in 1937. 83-year-old conductor, Kurt Sanderling, was there and witnessed the first performance and now, in his own unique fashion, he passes on the passion and the spirit of this controversial work as he rehearses it with the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra.
