Al Jazeera honours "The Bitter Taste of Tea"

21. apr. 2009 15.07 News

'The Bitter Taste of Tea' has won 'The Award For Freedom' at Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival in Qatar, which took place last week. The documentary which was first broadcast on DR last year, is the story about the poor conditions millions of workers in tea plantations in Sri Lanka, India and Kenya are working under.

During one year the directors Tom Heinemann and Erling Borgen visited more than 20 tea plantations in 4 countries. Tom Heinemann is very pleased with the award:  "It really is a great honour to win this award. Both Erling and I am quite happy and very proud," he says. He believes it is important to focus on globalization and its costs:
"There is a need for these global histories, which questions whether globalization takes place in a proper way. There is a growing interest in programs where we take the stories from distant lands perfectly back to the our backyard, where tea is drunk, "he explains.

However, it is not just Danish television viewers and the judges of the Al Jazeera documentary film festival, who like the film. 10 countries have already shown or purchased the film for broadcast.

It is far from the first time Tom Heinemann winner prices. Earlier he has won a second price at the Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival in China in 2008 and the prestigious Prix Italia award.
