DR
Big Band
DR Big Band has played itself into the musical heavyweight
class in its more than forty years of existence and it has
written its way into the annals of Danish and international
jazz.
The band was formed in 1964 and has acted as an ensemble for
the international jazz elite ever since, with chief conductors
like Ib Glindemann, Ray Pitts, Palle Mikkelborg, Thad Jones,
Ole Kock Hansen, Bob Brookmeyer and, since 1998, Jim McNeely.
Hundreds of other celebrated conductors, soloists and arrangers
have worked with the band over the years on specific projects,
including Miles Davis, Van Morrison, David Sanborn, Stan Kenton,
Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, George Russell, Manhattan Transfer,
John Scofield, Toots Thielemans, McCoy Tyner, Maria Schneider,
Oliver Nelson, Martial Solal, Tom Harrell and Benny Golson.
Its nineteen members include some of the leading jazz musicians
in Denmark, among them Lars Møller, Nikolaj Bentzon,
Henrik Bolberg, and Vincent Nilsson from Sweden. Former members
of DR Big Band include stars such as Niels-Henning Ørsted
Pedersen, Jesper Thilo, Allan Botschinsky and Bent Jædig.
The DR Big Band gives concerts at home and abroad, and every
year it tours Denmark with different soloists. DR Big Band
retains its place at the centre of the Danish jazz scene and
its important role as a busy ambassador for Denmark and DR
abroad.
From 2008 onwards DR Big Band will regularly feature at Copenhagen
Concert Hall
